YPOPs! 0.9.6 is in the works...

Postby anujseth on March 18th, 2008, 3:09 am

For all you YPOPs! users who think that the YPOPs! team has left you stranded....

My apologies for the inactivity from the team over such a long period of time. Its been hectic for all of us in our regular work lives and we have not been able to devote much time to YPOPs!

I for one love what I started over 6 years ago and will not let it die.

I've started working on YPOPs! 0.9.6. This version will have no new features. It will only address the numerous changes Yahoo keeps introducing to make life miserable for us ;-)

What I need is a list of various issues reported. This is what I would like, if its not asking for much:

Reply to this thread with the following details:
1. Details of your email client configuration and the YPOPs! log file. If you are not comfortable sending the log file as part of this thread, send it via PM.
2. List out all the issues you're seeing.

I might in turn get back in touch with a few of you, if I need more details.

My aim is to ensure that over the next few days, I keep addressing all the issues you're seeing and roll out 0.9.6 alpha/beta releases for feedback. Based on your feedback, we can determine the next steps.

YPOPs! is not dead. Yahoo is surely determined to stop such applications, but we will try out best to make sure it continues to live on.

anujseth,

Good day to you, I think most of us have been experience the problem of not being able to send email. In my case, I'm using MS Outlook 2003 and keep getting the "554 Mailbox Unrecognized" or something to that effect. I must say that it has been very hectic tring to get this to work (I have tried everything). However, we are able to receive messages from Yahoo and it is very frustrating to not be able to reply.

Anyhow, I work in the IT field as a technician and can help with what ever you may need. I do not have a log file for you because I have uninstalled the program. If you would like for me to reinstall it and get you a log I would be more then happy to. I know how frustrating it can be when you don't have the necessary information in front of you. Anyway, please feel free to email me as well with questions. I would be happy to help out.

Thanks,

Anarion

Progress Report #1

1. I've migrated to the latest OpenSSL and Curl libraries
2. We have removed dependency on the MIME++ library and adopted the GPL'ed VMime library instead. Finally!
3. Tested receiving emails on my personal account. It worked just fine for the classic and new interface. The catch though is that my account still resides on an "old Yahoo server": --> http://in.f948.mail.yahoo.com
4. Yet to test if sending emails work, but that I want to do last once receiving emails work fine across servers.

I need access to some of the latest mg and mc series Yahoo! Mail accounts to test with. Those are the ones where they have made some serious changes, I believe.

If you have access to a "dummy account" on one of these new servers or are willing to let me use one for a few days, please PM me. I promise I won't delete any emails!

If you're not sure which server your account is on, just login to Yahoo! Mail using a browser and check what the URL changes to.

Progress Report #2

I got hold of an mc server account and the news isn't all that good. Some big changes by Yahoo on these servers which might require a big redesign for us to continue supporting the Classic Interface. The good news is that the new interface works just fine for receiving emails. :-)

Has anyone tried using other software similar to YPOPs! which works on these servers?

FreePOPs, Web2Pop, FetchYahoo, and YoSucker are broken for the mc servers as well. Anything left to try?

Okay, one minor problem I'm encountering with the new Yahoo! Mail interface is that when I report a message as spam, it seems to throw off UIDL and YPOPs! will randomly download a previously read message as new.

RE: Progress Report #2

Anujseth,

I have tried multiple software (i.e. freepops, mrpostman etc..) and they don't work either plus they all suck. Definitely not the interface that ypops has (which by the way is very nice!)

Anyway, I'm able to recieve messages but not able to send.

Thanks,

Anarion

Dear all!

I am using Windows Live Mail and Windows Mail. of late from the week last, I am unable to send mails. As you told, Yahoo is making all efforts to thwart these kinds of attempts. But with your skill and in-depth analysis, I am sure YPOPs! 0.9.6 will work fine as it was previously.

with best wishes for your YPOPs! Projects success.

Thanks for the responses.

For those of you who mentioned that you are unable to send emails: I am assuming you tried with the Classic interface as one of the logs mentioned that. Can you all try with the new interface and let me know if it works with that?

Thanks!

Howdy! Thanks for working on getting a "fix". I was really enjoying using YPops.

Please take a look at: Not able to receive or send email - Outlook Express 6 (by emr001 on March 15th, 2008, 5:54 pm)
thread. It provides a copy of my Log File. Outlook Express is setup according to the instructions given in 0.9.5.1 Help manual.

I have not been able to send or receive yahoo email since they made the "enhancements".

If I am not mistaken, the "mc series" servers are on the Classic interface of Yahoo, and this breaks YPOPs!

Try the new interface. Again, If I'm not mistaken, when you change over to the new interface, the URL will have "mg" instead of "mc". Let me know if it works with this server?

Anujesth,

We are using the new interface.. The url does have the "mg" instead of "mc". Everyone should be able to receive email. They just can't send. If I'm not mistaken and if somebody would like to correct me, we all get the "554 mailbox unrecognized". I believe the people that will get this message are the people using Outlook Express and MS Outlook (All Versions). I'm not sure about any other email client. How close are you in figuring this out?

Thanks,

Anarion

Try the new interface. Again, If I'm not mistaken, when you change over to the new interface, the URL will have "mg" instead of "mc". Let me know if it works with this server?

PLEASE HELP!!! I have been using ypops and love it but as of sometime last week, I realized that my ypops that I use with Mozilla Thunderbird quit downloading my messages off of my yahoo! mail account. I did not change any of the settings or anything, it just quit working! So I tried to install ypops with outlook express and ypops told me that my username/password was invalid and I haven't changed my password. So I tried changing my password and that didn't help either. I even tried to download the webmail extension to get things back working but nothing will work!! what is going on?? I need my ypops back working with my mozilla thunderbird b/c I absolutely love it and have to have it!! Please help me. I have spent the last three days surfing the web looking for answers and suggestions and have gotten no where! Please help!! Thanks for any help I can get!!

Thanks, Meredithgrl

Here's a mail that arrived today with no headers apart from 'X-YPOPs-Folder: Inbox' and those added by my mail client. First line of the body of the mail is 'Yahoo! - 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable'. The body of the original mail appears to be appended. If YPOPs! could detect when this happens and retry a couple of times at 5 second intervals, it would probably get a clean copy on the second or third attempt or could issue a '-ERR no such message'?

Code: Select all
X-YPOPs-Folder: Inbox
