Hibernate Causes YPops to not work

Postby DMcK on September 10th, 2004, 10:15 am

Hello,
Does anyone, other than me, have the problem where hibernating their notebook causes YPops to not work anymore?

After coming out of hibernation, my email client continues to work properly and gets messages from my other, non-yahoo, accounts. I have to close YPops and then re-open it to get it to work again.

TIA,
Doug

You do realize that hibernation power-saving mode means that not even the operating system is running, right? Hibernation means to copy the contents of system memory into a disk file and power off the computer (this is a special power-off state which events in Task Scheduler can still cause a power-on if they are configured to wake the computer when it is asleep). That means when in hibernation mode, you don't have YahooPOPs running, or your e-mail client, or Windows itself. In hibernate mode and with the power off, not even the hard disks are spinning (which is a good thing when you are transporting the computer).

When you power the computer back up, the contents of the save file get rewritten back into memory and it looks like you are back where you were before. You might want to put the computer into Standby mode instead of Hibernate mode. Make sure the disks spin down when Standby mode gets entered. However, some network cards will still disconnect when put into Standby mode so your network connection is lost. Your e-mail client and YahooPops will still be running but the network interface is dead when in Standby mode so there are errors when YahooPops tries to connect to Yahoo for mail.

Hi Lee,
Thanks for the comments. Putting the notebook in Standby isn't a viable solution for me. You mention that putting the notebook into Hibernate would be needed for transporting (also for battery swapping).

So am I the only one experiencing this behaviour?

Well, I solved the problem by reinstalling YPops.

Then something changed other than Ypops. When in hibernate mode, there is NO power to run anything on your laptop. When in standby mode, the NIC may or may not become disabled (depends on its driver and configuration).

For hibernate mode, the drives will power down. For standby mode, I believe the hard disks spin down even if their power saving interval is longer than the standby interval. You'll have to see what settings you have available in the Power applet in Control Panel.

I don't know if your laptop goes into hibernate or standby mode when you close its lid or what mode gets used when you hit its sleep button, but your laptop's manual might tell you. Also, there are other power saving modes than just hibernate and standby and your laptop might be using one of those. You might be able to tell what modes get used by looking in the BIOS; often you'll see "(Sx)" when selecting BIOS-supported power saving modes, if enabled, where x is the ACPI power mode number.

Glad you got it working in whatever power saving mode your laptop happens to use during transport.
