Does Yahoopops require installation ??

Postby satyr on September 15th, 2004, 1:36 pm

Hello all, this is my first post here !!

1. Yesterday, checking Yahoopops installer, I happily found out, it is casual .zip archive, "compiled" to self-extracing executable. And as usual, I could "go-into it", and I see, it contains these directories:

yahoopops.exe\data
yahoopops.exe\lng
yahoopops.exe\plugins
yahoopops.exe\presetup

/NOTE: To "go-into" this .exe file, it requires this feature in your file-manger, but you can simply change extension from .exe to .zip, and then "browse" it as any other .zip file (because double-clicking on this .exe, would only execute installation wizard)

So, my question is simple and straightforward:

Could I use Yahoopops without installation, extracting "pure" release out of Data folder, copying it to some new location, and launch it for the first time (and in future use it from there), or installation procedure is needed/required, because it does some background work (registry keys/entries creation), that is required for this application to work properly (or to work at all) ??

I see, it only creates one key, with two sub-keys, and the only one, containing entires is Settings sub-key (without any string entry, specifying current directory path), but I do not know, if these keys/entries are created:

- during installation, same as in case of other "setup-required" software

- during (after) first program execution, as in case of "no-setups", that do not use local .ini files, but stores its settings in registry(windows/columns/tabs position, application configuration - filters, rules)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\YahooPOPs!
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\YahooPOPs!\YahooPOPs!
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\YahooPOPs!\YahooPOPs!\Settings

2. Let me also shortly explain, why this thing is so important to me. Well, it is because I prefer this "form" of software in general, where "no-installation-procedure-is-required", meaning applications to be ...

- single .zip file extracted to somewhere, including all program required files (libraries, other data files)

- single .exe file, that only needs to be copied to some place, and you can already execute it

Meaning no installation wizards bundled to self-executable file, and therefore no start-menu and desktop shortcuts created, no Add/Remove entries added, no ActiveX components and COM servers/objects registering in registry, and other supposely "required" modifications in registry (well, exept for more "low-level" software), etc., and belive me or not, I actually manage to replace most of my favourite "setup-procedure-required" programs, I was using in past (usually big and bloated "All in 1" utilities), with "non-setups", again, exept antiviruses, firewalls, and similar low-lever apps that require deeper "system-integration".

Btw., If someone is maybe interested, see my home page for more details, about why I became almoust obsessed with "non-setups", and also my other "computing-principles" are listed/stated there.

If YP cannot find it registry keys it creates them with default values. So it should work. Of course, when you "unistall" YP, you'll have to remove those values manually. Let us know how it works.

Yes, I am more than happy to report - it sure works.
Thanks !!

P.S., And please, try to keep program in this way also in future (i.e., type of installer, that only extracts zipped files)
