Postby rfeng on October 11th, 2003, 7:54 am

YahooPOPs! for Windows 98
Version: 0.4.6 | Filesize: 3.78 MB
Version: 0.5 | Filesize: 1.90 MB

To be used with Eudora [ to retrieve mail from multiple Yahoo addresses ]
Version 0.5 (the newer version) is 1/2 the size of Version 0.4.6
Which have you used?
What are the advantages / disadvantages for each?

I haven't had a chance to compare as yet, but I can say that version .5 is not really working for me at this time. When I do an email retrieval with Evolution (or any client) Yahoopops segfaults. Here is the log output:

[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Configuration:
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Log Mode = Advanced
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] MD5 = 0, Secure Mode = 0
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Use Proxy = 0, HTTP Proxy = "":0, HTTPS Proxy = "":0
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Max Emails = 10, Leave as unread = 0
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Emtpy Trash = 1, Empty Bulk = 0
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Download Inbox = 1, Download BulkMail = 1
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Email Category = All
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Proxy Auth = 0, Username = "", Password = <HIDDEN>
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Quiet Mode = 0, Autostart = 0, Always on Top = 0
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Network IP = , POP3 Port = 5058, SMTP Enable = 1, SMTP Port = 5059
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] Save Sent Email = 1, Enable UIDL = 1, Hide Tray Icon = 0
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] User Agent = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90)
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:11 2003 ] =========================================================================
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:17 2003 ] Starting POP3 session for "xaphir".
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:17 2003 ] <lxaphir> Password received from client.
[ Sat Oct 11 14:34:17 2003 ] <lxaphir> Connecting to Yahoo...

And then that's it. It bombs out without having done anything. I set the client pop3 server for localhost at port 5058. Nada.

Now I guess I'll try version 0.4.6

Sorry, but I forgot to mention that I'm runing Mandrake 9.1. I tried to download mail both in Evolution and with the Opera mail client set to localhost:5058. Don't know what I'm doing wrong; are there libraries I need to check for or something.

The size of 0.5 is so much smaller than 0.4.6 because the help files isn't all included in the installer download anymore. Only a compact one is.
The XML Library handler had been changed from XML4C to libxml too, and that makes the file size smaller as well. That is why 0.5 is only about half the size of 0.4.6 release

As for myself, I've been using 0.5 without problems ever since it's release.

v.46 vs. v.5

Postby neil_j on October 13th, 2003, 7:43 am

Hi RFEng  ,

de wb2cir.

YP! .46 seemed to have a problem dependably downloading more than 25 emails, the maximum that can be contained on a mail.yahoo.com webpage. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't; sometimes the delay was so long, it was difficult to tell what was going on, or whether the downloading would ever actually begin.

With YP! .5, there are no "terminating hang-ups" as apparent functions of "too many emails." The only delay is that which completely correlates with the number of emails that the YP! server is downloading, as is should be.

Mostly.

True, I have had my YP! .5 error, just a couple of times, in one of the last steps, after downloading the emails into my computer  . Maybe one day, I'll remember to write down the error message, but it happened within a step of when the messages are erased from Yahoo. And both times, there were around 75 emails being processed. (!Broadband or Bust!)

After the error, whatever it was, I started the process again, and YP! appeared to start processing all the emails again, although it completed more quickly than the first go-around. Perhaps the YP! server knew I had downloaded all my emails, so it was able to skip that step. Both times that happened, the final steps of the process completed properly.

0.46 was a godsend, but I'm glad it was updated. Without a doubt, 0.5 has been almost completely predictable and dependable, with 99% less problems than 0.46.

CUL,
-Neil-
