alternative software to Ypops?

Postby Cosmophilo on July 31st, 2008, 12:39 pm

Been with Ypops for many years, since the beginning and it worked great, until recently when it stopped working completely.
It seems now that too many constant changes from Yahoo has put an end to Ypops?

That being said, does anyone know of any alternative software that still work?
If so, post the names of the software in this thread.
Even just some software that downloads the basic text from Yahoo is fine.

Any ideas?

yes, there is a supported alternative that is used by many accounts & not just yahoo
if you googl pop & mail & free, you should be able to find the italian based program (with english sub-forums)
the downside is that particular app doens't have a SMTP engine i.e. you can't send from it - a 3rd part SMTP server shoul't be hard to find
as a supporter of ypops I can't shed the program name

Why not share whatever knowledge you "MAY" have? There's nothing left here , well, imagine an old western movie and the cowboys come upon a dead desiccated steer in the desert. The bones, well=ypops.

yes, please just share names of any actual software that still works.
Some folks don't need SMTP, and can use another account to send.

The reality is that Yops was great, and they did a great job.
But the yahoo's at Yahoo keep messing around, maybe to kill off things like Ypops, to force you to view the site for clicks.
So the guess is Ypops is finished.

So lets try and find something else, maybe something really simple would work, just plain text even?

Re: alternative software to Ypops? FreePOPs

Postby Cosmophilo on August 8th, 2008, 9:11 pm

I got software called FreePOPs to work, it downloaded from Yahoo perfectly.
FreePOPS
Just make sure you do the updates, including the MIMER thing, whatever that is.

Maybe the YPops team will join with the FreePOPs for the Yahoo part, or maybe just make YPops for pop3 only?
Many people get SMTP from their ISP, and just need to get the Yahoo messages into their email software.
The key seems to be to keep it simple, and not get too fancy.

So how come Freepops works OK?

Also, how do you get round sending mail? Is there another free programme that will work with Yahoo for that?

FreePOPs appears to just download from the Inbox, but it also appears to be able to add some scripts for more advanced users.
They are still updating and doing fixes for FreePOPs on a daily basis, so they fixed it when Yahoo changed.

I send SMTP from my isp, and maybe Gmail will work as a SMTP, with a different send address?

Sadly, I am not even going to post any more messages here, due to the excessive pop-ups, etc.

Maybe Ypops will come back someday, but as of now its uninstalled. They did a terrific job with Ypops for years, but it has retired, or at least is dormant, if not defunct.

FreePOPs seems to be the best thing now for this.

Way too many ads/pop-ups to make up for the fact ypops no linger works. Must be like Rocky part 25, making money off the franchise name but don't do a thing for it. I suggest freepops, works great, doesn't seem to go in the too hard to do box there, use my own smtp. so sadly no more hits from me on your ads.

jeez, who is collecting the cash from these miserable ads? Certainly not repairing ypops. If you would forward it to freepops I'd be on board for that.

If you use Thunderbird as your email client, a good alternative is Thunderbird "WebMail"
http://webmail.mozdev.org/
Go to the forum page and get the most up to date betas of both the add-ons you need:
http://groups.google.com/group/thunderb ... sion/files

Currently it is
web-mail-1-3-3b3.zip
yahoo-1-4-0b13.zip

They install as add-ons under Thunderbird.
You will notice there are 3 selections in the yahoo component for whichever version of Yahoo Mail you are running.
It will send and receive once you get it setup correctly (don't know about attachments, however).

Until Ypops gets fixed for good (with the new Vmime), this may be a decent alternative.
Freepops also seems to be updated frequently.
http://www.freepops.org/en
Finally...................
You can pick your most important Yahoo address(es) and buy the $20 a year service which works like a champ!

Just bumping this thread for those of us who can no longer use ypops..

Both solutions in this thread work great - although with FreePOPs you cannot send mail, only receive.

As a Thunderbird user, I didn't even know about the WebMail extension until I found this thread. I just set it up and it works great receiving and sending. Just remember to use your full email address for the user name in both POP and SMTP settings (if you don't, you'll get a 'undefined is a unsupported domain.. error).

I too found this thread only after struggling with the problems of Ypops from the last few days. And I too am a Thunderbird user and had not heard of these great extensions.

However, I need to know how to configure the extensions. I'm having problems and the discussion threads on the extension home page aren't providing any help.

I'm getting the error message, "Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server localhost responded: negative vibes from [username]@yahoo.com."

I have Thunderbird set up as:

Server type: POP mail server
Server name: localhost
Port: 110
User name: [username]@yahoo.com
Use secure connection: Never

My Webmail - Yahoo (1.4.0b13) extension settings are:

Mode: Production website
POP: (Check) Mark emails as read on server
SMTP: (Uncheck) Save copy in sent items
Advanced: (Check) Use Short ID

And Ypops is turned OFF. What should I fix? Thanks in advance!

Change the Mode to either BETA Website or New Classic, depending on which your Yahoo mail account is currently set to.

If that doesn't work for you, close Thunderbird and change your Yahoo mail account though their web interface (from the new interface to classic, or vice versa), reopen Thunderbird and change the setting in Webmail - Yahoo.

Brilliant! Worked like a charm. Thank you jimijames1, not least of all for your lightning-fast response!

Good-bye Ypops. Thanks for your hard work over the years.

Thanks for posting a solution. I am switching to Webmail today! I have always used multiple Yahoo addresses to keep my various hobbies separate. I have one addy for my family to use. One for my health groups, one for genealogy and one as a "junk" mail type thing. I use it to register for things that might potentially end up being more spam filled than useful. So I start with that address and once I see if the group/company etc is going to flood me with spam or not, then I can change the address to the proper one. My 6 yr old also has a Yahoo addy to keep in touch with selected friends and family and with the ability to leave mail on Yahoo's server but also d/l it to my Thunderbird, I can keep an eye on his messages that he gets while leaving them for him to get on the web. So with at least 5 Yahoo addresses to either get mail from or simply monitor the mail coming to the address, I found YPOPs to be very valuable. But the numerous problems I've had in the last year as well as the lack of response I've seen from other people complaining has led me to decide to switch. I'd never heard of Webmail before yesterday. Thank you for posting it!
