554 Cannot send message

Postby Bobson on September 24th, 2004, 4:17 pm

Like a number of others, I have recently been having problems with YP. For a while I was getting duplicate emails but I installed the patches recommended in this forum and was able to eventually fix the problem. :D

But now I am unable to send. :( I get the following message:

"Your email message was unable to be sent because your mail server rejected the message. 554 Cannot send message."

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Here is my log.

I assume you sent several messages and just the last one failed?

Try setting your cookie timeout to zero from 24000

What was in this file?

'My_Yahoo_ID.sendresponse.html'

Hi muerte33,

Thanks for your response. I haven't been able to send any messages; it's not just this one that failed. I tried your suggestion of changing my cookie timeout to zero. Unfortunately it had no effect.

I was about to say I had no idea what the file 'My_Yahoo_ID.sendresponse.html' meant until I checked it out. It is a Yahoo verification page:
Send - Verify
To finish sending this message and help us fight spam, please enter the character string as it is shown in the box below.
Trouble seeing this image?
Character string shown:
Why do I have to do this?
This step helps Yahoo! prevent spammers from using Yahoo! Mail, and helps to ensure that your email will be delivered.

With each message that I send, the character string changes and filling out the box with the characters does not help.

This is nicknamed a "challenge" screen.
This is Yahoo's attempt to thwart spammers from using their service.
Usually if you only send the message to one or two people you don't get this very often. If you send beaucoup messages daily to multiple recipients you will probably get "challenged" often.

When I get challenged it normally gets reset after I sign into the web interface and answer the question. I don't get it again for a couple of weeks. I don't send much mail though.
I would suggest using your regular ISP to send messages if this is a problem.

There is also a command line utility from sourceforge called BLAT.
http://blat.sourceforge.net/
It can be used with Ypops and will give you quick feedback at the command prompt if you want to try it.

Here is a sample blat command line send

blat readme.txt -to [email protected] -f [email protected] -server
localhost -debug

Blat v2.2.2 (build : Feb 26 2004 10:37:13)
Sending readme.txt to [email protected]
Login name is [email protected]
